G.A.W Studio

A workshop of Gilberto Wilson

Gilberto Wilson and his family migrated from Aruba in the Netherland Antilles to the United States in 1968. Industrialization of the islands prime industry, and lack of opportunities brought the family to these shores. His love for art was kindled at a very early age. He was blessed to have opportunities and great teachers. The late 1960’s was a watershed moment in American history. The Vietnam War, Cold War, Civil Rights Movement, the assassinations of R.F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King set the tone of the time. Unrest raged across this country and the world. These events greatly influenced this young artist. After graduating from high school, he spent that summer as an intern at MOMA (The museum of modern art). He started at the Cooper Union School of Art in the fall. After obtaining his B.F.A.  he went on to Temple University (Tyler School of Art), where he obtained his M.F.A. He then went on to spend five years working as an apprentice at the Brandywine Graphic Workshop. While there he worked with the following artists, Romare Bearden, Benny Andrews, Selma Burke, Richard Hunt, and many others.
